E-commerce Website Development Cost in India (2026): Real Prices by Store Size
You have products people want. Maybe you already sell on Instagram, on WhatsApp, or on a marketplace like Amazon or Meesho. Now you want your own online store, with your own brand name on it. And the first question is always the same: how much will it cost?
Search online and you will find answers from ₹15,000 to ₹45 lakh. That range is so wide it is almost useless. No wonder most business owners feel stuck before they even begin.
This guide will fix that. We will show you what an e-commerce website really costs in India in 2026, broken down by the size of your store. You will see what you get at each price, the monthly costs that come after launch, and how to avoid paying for things you do not need. At RankDigi, we have built online stores for 15 years, on WooCommerce, Shopify, and custom code. These numbers come from real projects and real quotes.
The Short Answer: E-commerce Website Cost in India
Here is what most Indian businesses pay to build an online store in 2026:
- Starter store (up to about 50 products): ₹40,000 to ₹80,000
- Growing store (50 to 500 products, custom design): ₹80,000 to ₹2.5 lakh
- Advanced store (500+ products, custom features, integrations): ₹2.5 lakh to ₹6 lakh
- Marketplace or large custom platform: ₹6 lakh and above
These are typical market ranges. Your own price depends on your products, your design, and the features you need.
At RankDigi, a complete e-commerce website starts at ₹39,999. That gets you a real, working store with payments and shipping connected, not a half-finished template.

Why E-commerce Prices Vary So Much
Imagine opening a physical shop. A small counter in a local market and a three-floor showroom in a mall are both "shops". But the rent, the interiors, the billing system, and the staff are completely different. Online stores are the same. Six things decide your price.
1. The platform you choose
Most Indian stores are built on one of three options:
- WooCommerce (WordPress): you own everything, there is no monthly platform fee, and it is very flexible. You pay for hosting and for the build.
- Shopify: faster to launch and easy to manage, but you pay a monthly fee that starts at around ₹2,000, plus charges for many apps.
- Custom development: built from scratch for unusual needs. It costs the most and takes the longest, but nothing limits you.
The right choice depends on your business, not on what is popular. We compare them fairly in WordPress vs Shopify for e-commerce in India and in our guide on how to sell online in India.
2. The number of products
Twenty products can be added in a day. Two thousand products with sizes, colours, and photos is weeks of work, even with bulk upload tools. Product upload is one of the most underestimated costs in any store.
3. Design: ready theme or custom
A good ready theme with your branding costs less and launches faster. A fully custom design costs more but makes your store look like no one else's. For a first store, a well-chosen theme, properly customised, is usually the smart choice.
4. Features
Every store needs a cart, checkout, and payments. Beyond that, each feature adds cost: product filters, wishlists, coupons, reviews, size charts, WhatsApp order alerts, cash on delivery rules, wholesale pricing, subscriptions, or a loyalty programme.
5. Integrations
Connecting your store to other systems saves you hours every day, but it takes work to set up. Common ones in India are payment gateways (Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree), shipping partners (Shiprocket, Delhivery), GST billing software, and stock management tools.
6. Who builds it
A beginner, an experienced developer, and a large agency will quote very different prices for the same store. We explained these price bands in detail in our guide to website design costs in Delhi, and the same logic applies across India.
What You Get at Each Price Level
Starter store: ₹40,000 to ₹80,000
This is the right start for most small businesses. You should get:
- A professional theme customised with your logo, colours, and banners
- Up to about 50 products uploaded with photos and descriptions
- Cart, checkout, and customer accounts
- Payment gateway with UPI, cards, net banking, and cash on delivery
- Shipping rates and a shipping partner connected
- Order emails to you and your customer
- Mobile-friendly design and basic SEO setup
- Training so you can add products and manage orders yourself
This is the level where our own e-commerce package begins. It is enough to start selling properly and to test what your customers want before you invest more.
Growing store: ₹80,000 to ₹2.5 lakh
When you have a larger catalogue or a brand that needs to stand out, you move here. Expect a custom design, 50 to 500 products, smart filters and search, coupons and offers, customer reviews, abandoned cart reminders, WhatsApp and email notifications, and faster loading built for heavy traffic.
The home furnishing store we built for RD Trend on WooCommerce and the ethnic wear store for Shahi Libas on Shopify are good examples of this level.
Advanced store: ₹2.5 lakh to ₹6 lakh
This is for established businesses. Think 500+ products, custom features that no plugin offers, live stock sync with your billing or ERP software, multiple warehouses, wholesale and retail pricing together, or selling in several currencies.
Marketplace or large platform: ₹6 lakh and above
If you want many sellers on one platform, a mobile app, or a store handling thousands of orders a day, you need custom engineering. That is a custom development project, and it is quoted after a proper discussion of your requirements.
Where Does the Money Actually Go?
When you pay ₹1 lakh for a store, you are not paying for "a website". You are paying for many separate jobs. A typical split looks like this:
- Store setup and features (about 30%): the platform, cart, checkout, filters, and everything that makes the store work.
- Design and branding (about 25%): how your store looks and how easy it is to use.
- Product upload (about 15%): adding every product with the right photos, prices, and variants.
- Speed, SEO, and testing (about 13%): making sure it loads fast, appears on Google, and works on every phone.
- Payments and shipping (about 12%): gateways, COD rules, shipping zones, and tax settings.
- Training and launch (about 5%): teaching you to run the store and going live safely.
Seeing it this way helps you compare quotes. If one quote is far cheaper, ask which of these jobs has been left out.

The Monthly Costs After Your Store Goes Live
Building the store is a one-time cost. Running it has monthly costs, and you should plan for them from day one.
- Hosting: ₹300 to ₹2,500 a month for a WooCommerce store, depending on traffic. On Shopify, hosting is part of the plan.
- Platform fee: ₹0 for WooCommerce. Around ₹2,000 a month and up for Shopify.
- Payment gateway charges: roughly 2% of each online payment, plus GST on that fee. There is usually no setup fee.
- Shipping: charged per parcel by your courier partner. Cash on delivery and returns cost extra.
- Apps and plugins: ₹0 to ₹5,000 a month, depending on what you add.
- Domain: ₹800 to ₹1,500 a year.
- Maintenance: updates, backups, and security. Our maintenance plans start at ₹1,999 a month.
- Marketing: ads, SEO, and offers. A store with no visitors makes no sales, so keep a budget for this.
A simple rule: keep at least 15% to 20% of your build cost aside for the first year of running and improving the store.
A Simple Two-Year Example: WooCommerce vs Shopify
The build price is only half the story. Look at the total over two years before you decide. Here is a simple, illustrative example for a store with about 100 products.
- WooCommerce: a higher build cost at the start, then roughly ₹500 to ₹1,000 a month for good hosting. There is no platform fee, and most features come from one-time or low-cost plugins.
- Shopify: often a lower build cost and a faster launch, then around ₹2,000 a month for the plan, plus paid apps for things like reviews, COD rules, or advanced filters. Over 24 months, those fees alone can cross ₹60,000.
Neither is "better". If you want to launch quickly and prefer everything managed for you, Shopify is comfortable. If you want full ownership and lower running costs as you grow, WooCommerce usually wins. Ask your developer to show you this two-year total for your own store before you sign.
Seven Ways to Lower Your Cost Without Hurting Sales
- Launch with your bestsellers. Start with 30 to 50 products that already sell. Add the rest month by month.
- Use a good theme first. Go for a custom design after you have real sales data.
- Prepare product data yourself. A clean spreadsheet with names, prices, sizes, and photos can cut the upload cost sharply.
- Take clear product photos. Good photos sell more than any fancy feature.
- Skip features you will not use in month one. Wishlists and loyalty points can wait.
- Choose the platform for the long run. A low starting price with high monthly fees can cost more over two years.
- Ask for a fixed quote with a clear list. It protects you from surprise bills.
Mistakes That Make Online Stores Expensive
We often get calls from store owners who paid twice: once for a cheap store, and again to fix it. These are the usual causes.
- A slow store. Every extra second of loading loses buyers. If your store already feels slow, read 5 signs your WooCommerce store needs a speed audit, or ask us about speed optimization.
- The store is not in your name. The domain, hosting, and payment gateway account must belong to you.
- Checkout is confusing on mobile. Most Indian shoppers buy on their phones. A long or broken mobile checkout kills sales.
- No COD or UPI. Many buyers still prefer cash on delivery, and almost everyone uses UPI.
- Nobody tested real orders. A store must be tested with real payments, refunds, and shipping labels before launch.
- No plan for after launch. Stores need updates and backups. Ignoring them leads to hacked or broken sites.
How Long Does It Take to Build an Online Store?
A starter store usually takes 4 to 6 weeks. A growing store takes 6 to 8 weeks. Advanced stores take two to four months. The biggest factor is usually not the developer. It is how quickly product details and photos are ready. See our guide on how long it takes to build a website for a week-by-week view.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum cost to start an online store in India?
You can open a basic store on a website builder for a few thousand rupees a month. A professionally built store that you fully own, with payments and shipping set up, usually starts around ₹40,000.
Is WooCommerce cheaper than Shopify?
Over two or three years, WooCommerce is usually cheaper because there is no monthly platform fee. Shopify can be cheaper and faster in the first few months. The better choice depends on your catalogue and how you like to work.
Can I manage the store myself after it is built?
Yes. You should be able to add products, change prices, create coupons, and process orders without calling a developer. We train you on all of this before launch.
Do I need GST registration to sell online?
In most cases, yes, if you sell goods online in India. Payment gateways also ask for business documents. Please confirm your exact case with your CA, as rules depend on what you sell and your turnover.
Can you move my existing store to a better platform?
Yes. We move products, customers, and orders, and we set up redirects so you do not lose your Google rankings. Our redesign checklist explains the process.
